It’s Time to Demand: Made in the USA.

Why was this allowed to happen? Why would we allow millions of Americans to depend on drugs made in China? How could U.S. manufacturers move their supply chains and much of their drug manufacturing facilities to China? Why would past administrations not do something to protect the American people from the threat we are facing today? This upsetting news was told to the Senate Committee on Small Business and Entrepreneurship on March 12, 2020.

“Thousands of our generic drugs and even some of the brand name products and perhaps even new therapies for coronavirus may depend on the chemicals that are sourced primarily in China,” Rosemary Gibson, a senior adviser to the Garrison, New York-based Hastings Center Bioethics Research Institute, told the committee.

A December report in Politico reported the percentage of drugs needed by the American people imported from China are:

  • 95% of all our ibuprofen
  • 91% of all our hydrocortisone
  • 70% of all our acetaminophen
  • 40 to 45% of all our penicillin
  • 40% of all our heparin

Even more unnerving, according to Commerce Department data, 80% of the U.S. supply of antibiotics is made in China.

This, of course, can lead to a national security risk. With the U.S. dependence on Chinese drug production, if Beijing follows through on the threat published by Xinhua, we could soon find ourselves facing shortages of the drugs millions of American’s need to survive.

Rosemary Gibson also testified: “The unleashing of this threat will cause unprecedented deaths and social disorder on a scale never seen before on our country. Civilian and military health care systems will collapse. China can wreak other havoc. Medicines in the hands of an adversary can be weaponized.

“Medicines can be made with lethal contaminants or sold without any real medicine in them, rendering them ineffective. These products can be distributed to specific targets. Detection is time-consuming at best, and virtually impossible at worst.

“Dependence on China is a risk to the U.S. military, combat readiness, and force protection. The thousands of men and women on U.S. aircraft carriers in the South China Sea are dependent on the adversary for many of their essential medicines.

“Combat readiness and force protection are at risk with the military vulnerable to disruptions in supply and contaminated and toxic medicines. In 2018, more than 31,000 active-duty military personnel, veterans, and their family members were notified they may have been given blood pressure medicines containing a cancer-causing ingredient.”

This is why President Trump has said we MUST bring prescription and Over-the-Counter drug manufacturing back to OUR shores. We can no longer rely on China to provide us with low-cost, substandard quality, and far too often dangerous medicines. We are sacrificing our future by relying on China. We may soon learn the price to pay will be great, and possibly even deadly.

As the old saying goes, “You get what you pay for.”
